Utterwick Group plc — Divisions

Data & Instrumentation

Industrial sensor networks and cloud analytics for critical infrastructure. Monitoring what matters, continuously.

Division overview

Updated April 2026

Utterwick Data & Instrumentation (UDI) is the sensor technology division of Utterwick Group plc. Founded within the group in 2008, UDI designs, manufactures, and deploys modular wireless sensor platforms for industrial environments where continuous monitoring is not optional — it is a regulatory and operational necessity.

The division employs approximately 280 people across engineering, product development, field deployment, and customer success teams. UDI serves three primary markets: water utilities, chemical processing, and food manufacturing.

Leadership and strategic direction

Sophie Callender, Managing Director of Utterwick Data & Instrumentation, joined from Renishaw in 2016. Under her leadership, UDI has evolved from a single-product sensor business into a vertically integrated platform company, combining hardware, edge computing, and cloud analytics into a unified offering for industrial customers.

Callender's background in precision measurement at Renishaw informed UDI's emphasis on calibration accuracy and sensor reliability — qualities that differentiate the Sondrel platform in competitive tenders.

Product portfolio

Sondrel 3

Third-generation modular wireless industrial sensor platform. Sondrel 3 delivers 14-millisecond mesh latency across dense industrial environments, enabling real-time process monitoring at scale.

Winner of the Midlands Technology Award for Industrial IoT, 2022.

Sondrel Edge

Compact off-grid sensor variant with LoRaWAN connectivity. Launched in 2021 for remote and unmanned installations where mains power and wired networks are unavailable.

Vantage IQ

Cloud analytics platform launched in 2019. Vantage IQ is the intelligence layer above the sensor network — aggregating, analysing, and presenting operational data to support predictive maintenance and compliance reporting.

Innovation and intellectual property

UDI filed two patents in 2022 relating to low-power sensor mesh networking. These patents protect innovations in the Sondrel 3 mesh protocol that enable the platform's 14-millisecond latency while maintaining battery life exceeding 36 months in typical deployments.

The division's R&D investment is focused on three areas: sensor miniaturisation, edge analytics processing, and interoperability with legacy SCADA systems. This investment pipeline supports Utterwick Group's broader equity story as an industrial technology business with defensible IP.

Markets and stakeholder engagement

UDI's core markets — water utilities, chemical processing, and food manufacturing — share a common requirement: continuous monitoring of process variables in environments where sensor failure has direct regulatory, safety, and financial consequences.

The division maintains long-term framework agreements with several UK water companies and has an expanding presence in European chemical processing, particularly in the Benelux region.
